In Kootenai County as of July 2023, 3,540 jobs remain unfilled, and a growing number of residents are moving out of the area because they cannot afford the cost of housing.

The percentage of households able to afford to purchase a home fell from 75% in 2016 to only 20% in 2023. Local rental prices have risen so sharply that many of our low-income families pay 50% or more of their income for housing.

Would you rather have a hand in positive change or just be swept along in the negative change that is  going to happen if we fail to build and preserve housing our local workers can afford?

Growth in our county is here to stay and restricting the number of homes built will NOT stop growth. Already many residents are being swept away by the negative changes that come with Kootenai County’s lack of housing for its local workers. ONLY when people can afford to live where they work can the small-town flavor and beauty of a community be preserved despite the growth that is happening.

We believe initiating change gives us a better opportunity to manage the change that is inevitable. With PAHA, the private market, and municipalities working together, we can build and preserve housing our local workers can afford no matter how many times the homes sell.
